About this Academic Event

CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University COURSE OUTLINE There are many stress-reduction techniques in dentistry available to us today. Few, if any, carry the advantages that nitrous oxide and benzodiazepines do. Dentists will leave this course with the knowledge of how to safely and effectively incorporate nitrous oxide and oxygen into their practice, as well as oral benzodiazepines alone or in combination with nitrous oxide. In addition, as a requirement of the RCDSO, participants enrolled in this course must review the more common and the more-dangerous emergencies that we might face. There is a written examination for certification with the RCDSO. This course meets the requirements of the RCDSO (Standards of Practice – Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia I Dental Practice) LEARNING OBJECTIVES Course content includes a review of: • RCDSO standard of practice; patient monitoring requirements; respiratory and cardiovascular system physiology; pharmacology of nitrous oxide and benzodiazepines; conscious sedation armamentarium; • Oral sedation regimens; nitrous oxide administration; medical emergencies and airway management; incorporation of moderate conscious sedation into your practice; • Patient health history review; • The incidence of medical emergencies and how to anticipate and recognize them; • Emergency airway management; • Pharmacology and use of medical emergency drugs; Medical emergency kit review; • How to treat the treatable medical emergencies (scenarios and algorithms), and when to get help; • How to organize your team and your office to ensure the best possible outcomes
